SPAR Karumba — Replacing the Oven Behind a Supermarket's Hot Food Line

SPAR Karumba sits on the Gulf of Carpentaria, about as far from a capital city as a Queensland supermarket gets. Hot food has always been part of what they sell — the oven behind it had reached the end of its life.

The Challenge
Hot food is one of the few genuinely high-margin lines a small supermarket can run, and in a remote town it fills a gap nobody else is filling — there's no food court down the road. Karumba had been selling it for years, so the question was never whether the category worked. It was what to replace a worn-out oven with, in a store that can't go dark on roast chicken while it waits.

 

The Solution — A Qubi Oven and Hot Grab-and-Go

The recipe range was the point. Replacing like for like would have bought back the same menu the store already had. An oven that only does one thing locks that menu in; the Qubi lets them build it out and change it, so one oven covers roast chicken, hot vegetables and pies rather than doing a single fixed job.

 

The Outcome
Karumba kept its hot food line running through the change-over, and came out of it able to cook more than it could before — roast chicken, hot vegetables, pies and more, from a store a long way from the nearest alternative.
