How to Buy Commercial Refrigeration Online in Australia
There is no shopping cart for a three-metre multideck — and there shouldn’t be. Here is how ordering actually works, and how to buy well without standing in a showroom.
By the Chill Pro Refrigeration team · Updated September 2026
Buying commercial refrigeration online in Australia works as an enquiry-and-quote process rather than a checkout: you send your measurements, power and access details, the supplier confirms what will fit and what it will cost delivered to your address, and the cabinet is freighted to you. There is no add-to-cart for a three-metre multideck, and a supplier who offers one is skipping the questions that stop the wrong cabinet arriving.
This guide is for supermarket, grocery, convenience store, butcher and deli owners who are buying without a showroom visit — which, outside a handful of capital-city addresses, is almost everyone. It covers what to send with an enquiry, how to specify a cabinet you cannot stand in front of, what a complete quote should come back with, realistic lead times, what protects you when you buy sight-unseen, and what to check the moment the truck arrives. Chill Pro Refrigeration is a Brisbane-based supplier of energy-efficient R290 commercial refrigeration, dispatching from Brisbane and Sydney with freight Australia-wide, and this is the process we run with customers every week.
Why there is no "buy now" button — and why that protects you
Retail websites sell you a box and let the courier sort out the rest. Commercial refrigeration cannot work that way, for three practical reasons.
The cabinet has to fit a specific room. Not just the wall run, but the aisle in front of it, the doorway it comes through, the ceiling above it and the power available beside it. A checkout cannot ask those questions, so a checkout cannot tell you the cabinet is wrong before it ships.
The freight is not a courier job. These are heavy, tall, pallet-loaded items that travel on refrigeration-aware freight, and the cost and lead time depend on your actual address. A flat shipping rate either overcharges metro buyers or strands regional ones.
The specification has to match the duty. The same shop floor might need an open multideck in one aisle and a doored cabinet in the next, and a cart cannot tell you which. Our guide to where to buy commercial refrigeration in Australia covers the choice of supplier channel; this guide covers what happens once you have chosen one.
The upshot is that a proper enquiry process is not friction. It is the step where the mistakes get caught.
What to send with your enquiry
The single biggest thing that speeds up a quote is sending enough detail the first time. A supplier who has to ask five follow-up questions costs you a week. Send these and most quotes can be answered properly on the first reply.
Your measurements, in millimetres. The clear length of each wall or floor run, measured between fixed obstructions rather than corner to corner, plus the aisle depth in front of each run and the ceiling height above it.
The delivery path. The narrowest doorway, corridor and turn between where the truck can park and where the cabinet has to end up, plus any steps, lifts, low bulkheads, shared loading docks or restricted delivery hours.
What each run has to merchandise. Fresh meat, dairy, drinks, packaged lines, frozen, deli — and roughly how many lines in each. This is what decides cabinet type, not just size.
Your power situation. How many outlets are available near each run, whether they are dedicated circuits, and whether an electrician is already engaged for the fit-out.
Photos and a rough sketch. Two or three photos of the space and a hand sketch with the measurements on it are more useful than a paragraph of description. A sketch on the back of an envelope is genuinely fine.
Your timing. When you need it running, and whether it is a staged replacement around trading hours or an empty shop.
Working out the measurements themselves is its own exercise — our guide to sizing a cabinet run to your floor space walks through which three measurements actually decide a fit-out.
How to specify a cabinet you can't stand in front of
You lose three things buying remotely: you cannot open the door, you cannot see the finish, and you cannot judge the size by eye. All three have written substitutes, and asking for them is normal.
Ask for the full dimensions rather than the nominal size. A cabinet described as "2.5 metre" is rarely exactly 2500 mm, and on a measured wall that difference decides whether the run fits.
Ask for the kWh per day figure in writing. It is the one number that turns into real money every day the cabinet runs, and it is the fastest way to compare two options on paper.
Ask which climate class it was tested to. That is the ambient temperature and humidity the cabinet was performance-tested at, and it is what tells you whether it will hold temperature in your shop in February rather than in a laboratory.
Ask about the practical build details. Compressor position, self-contained or remote, glazing, LED colour, shelf configuration, castors, and whether the interior can be cleaned without dismantling the shelving. These are the things you live with daily.
Ask to see it installed somewhere real. Photographs of the same model in a working shop tell you more about finish and presence than a studio render does. Our projects page has installs across Queensland and New South Wales, and the Martoo Meats case study shows a full multideck and deli fit-out in a working Kingaroy butcher shop.
Our guide to comparing commercial refrigeration suppliers goes through the criteria that separate two quotes once you have them side by side.
What a complete quote should come back with
A quote that is only a number is not comparable to anything. A complete one tells you what you are getting and what it will cost to own. Expect all of the following, and ask for whatever is missing.
The delivered price to your address, not an ex-warehouse figure — with freight, delivery to the final position, commissioning, and removal of the old equipment either included or clearly priced separately.
The full model specification: dimensions, kWh per day, refrigerant, climate class, power requirement, and the shelving configuration you will actually use.
The lead time to your address, as a date range rather than "in stock".
The warranty terms in writing: what is covered, for how long, whether labour is included as well as parts, and who performs the work.
What is excluded. Electrical work, plumbing for drains, shopfitting, and any site preparation are commonly the buyer's responsibility, and it is better to know that at quote stage.
Chill Pro quotes on a per-customer basis rather than publishing price lists, because the delivered figure genuinely depends on the cabinets, the site and the freight run. Send your dimensions and we come back with a delivered price, a kWh per day figure per cabinet, and a lead time. If the fit-out you need is larger than this quarter's cashflow, Chill Pro Trusted Finance Partners offer competitive rates in the market — ask us about it.
Lead times and what actually drives them
Lead time is the question that most often gets a vague answer, so it is worth knowing what moves it.
Stock position first. A cabinet held in the Brisbane or Sydney warehouse dispatches quickly; a configuration built to order does not. Ask which yours is.
Then your address. Metro Brisbane and Sydney are the quickest. Regional Queensland and regional New South Wales add days rather than weeks. Remote deliveries depend on the freight run that services the area, which is why an honest supplier gives you a range and not a promise. Our guide to regional and remote refrigeration freight explains how that side of it prices and schedules.
Then access. A first-floor shop, a shared dock, an arcade, or a centre with restricted delivery hours all need planning rather than improvisation, and telling the supplier up front prevents a failed delivery.
Then your own trades. If an electrician has to install circuits before the cabinets can run, that work sets the real date, not the freight.
What happens between dispatch and a running cabinet — freight, delivery day, positioning, settling and commissioning — is covered end to end in our delivery and installation guide.
What protects you when you buy sight-unseen
This is the part buyers worry about most, and it has concrete answers rather than reassurance.
The warranty, and specifically who honours it. A supplier that specifies, imports and supports its own range fixes its own equipment; a reseller refers you back up the chain. Chill Pro cabinets carry a 2-year parts and labour warranty that we honour ourselves.
Australian Consumer Law. Your statutory rights apply to a commercial refrigeration purchase the same as any other, they sit on top of any written warranty, and they cannot be signed away. A written warranty is an addition to those rights, never a replacement for them.
The paper trail. Get the specification, the delivered price, the lead time and the warranty terms in an email rather than over the phone. It costs nothing and it is what you will refer back to.
Evidence the supplier has done it before. Named customers, photographs of real installs, and shops you could plausibly ring are worth more than any claim on a website. Ours are on the projects page.
Parts availability. Ask whether spare parts for the model are held in Australia and what the typical lead time is for a controller, fan motor, door gasket or compressor. A cabinet that cannot be fixed quickly is a cabinet full of stock at risk.
What to check the moment it arrives
Do this before the driver leaves and before the cabinet is switched on. It takes ten minutes and it is the difference between a simple claim and an argument.
Check the cabinet against the order. Model, size, door configuration, glass type, shelving and finish — that it is what you specified, not merely something similar.
Check the packaging and the panels for freight damage. Look at corners, the base frame, glass edges and the condenser area, and photograph anything suspect while the delivery is still in progress.
Note any damage on the delivery paperwork before you sign. A signature on a clean docket makes a freight claim considerably harder.
Check the accessories are all there. Shelves, brackets, castors, keys, night blinds and the manual are commonly boxed separately and are the things most often left on the truck.
Then leave it standing. A cabinet that has travelled needs to stand before it is switched on so the compressor oil settles — the delivery and installation guide covers the commissioning sequence and how long to run it empty before loading stock.
A worked enquiry
Here is what a first email that gets a same-day, properly specified answer looks like. It is short.
"We're a butcher shop in Toowoomba replacing our front display. Clear wall run is 5,800 mm between the corner and the door frame, aisle in front is 1,700 mm, ceiling 2,700 mm. Front door is 900 mm wide with a straight run into the shop, no steps. We need serve-over for meat and smallgoods, plus a couple of metres of upright display for packaged lines and drinks. Three outlets on that wall, sparky already booked. Photos and a sketch attached. Hoping to install in the first week of next month, and we can't close the shop. What do you recommend, what's the delivered price, and what are the kWh per day figures?"
That email contains everything needed to quote properly: the measurements, the access, the duty, the power, the timing and the constraint. The reply can be a real recommendation rather than a request for more information.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you buy commercial refrigeration online in Australia?
Yes, but it works as an enquiry and quote rather than a checkout. You send your measurements, access details and what each run has to merchandise, and the supplier confirms what fits and quotes a delivered price to your address. Commercial cabinets are freighted on pallets rather than couriered, so the cost and lead time depend on your actual location.
What information do I need to send to get a quote?
The clear length of each wall run in millimetres, the aisle depth in front of it, the ceiling height, the narrowest doorway and turn on the delivery path, what each run has to merchandise, your power situation, and your timing. Photos and a rough sketch help more than a written description.
How long does delivery take?
It depends on whether the cabinet is held in stock or built to order, and on your address. Metro Brisbane and Sydney are quickest, regional Queensland and New South Wales add days, and remote locations depend on the freight run servicing the area. Ask for a date range rather than "in stock".
Is it safe to buy a commercial fridge without seeing it first?
It is, provided you get the specification, delivered price, lead time and warranty terms in writing, and you know who honours the warranty. Chill Pro cabinets carry a 2-year parts and labour warranty that we honour ourselves, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law apply on top of that and cannot be signed away.
What should I check when the cabinet is delivered?
Check it against your order for model, size, door configuration and shelving; inspect the panels, glass edges, base frame and condenser area for freight damage and photograph anything suspect; note any damage on the paperwork before signing; and confirm the accessories are all there. Then let it stand before switching it on.
